Apples
Dice them small so every bite has fruit, not a slab.
Base
The short pre-bake keeps the bottom from going soggy.
Cinnamon
One teaspoon is enough. Extra clove muddies the apple.
Cut
Cool fully. A warm bar slumps.

FAQ
Which apples?
A firm one, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. Soft apples turn to sauce.
Skip the pre-cook?
The bars will have hard fruit. Cook them.
Add oats?
A quarter cup of oats in the crumb is fine. More than that dries the top.
Storage
Refrigerate 4 days. The crumb softens, then crisps in a 325°F oven for 8 minutes.
